This innovative product is designed for use with OrCam’s AI-driven assistive devices, which assist individuals with visual impairments or learning disabilities by reading text aloud. It offers a stable, fixed-distance setup (for A3/A4 formats) to ensure clear and consistent image capture without the need for manual adjustments.

The Challenge
The challenge was to create a versatile, user-friendly device capable of handling various content types, from thick books to single pages and photos. To achieve this, the design includes adaptive “lips” for material stabilization, a centering arrow for alignment, and a light frame to keep content in view. An adjustable arm with a smart magnetic mechanism allows for easy height changes with one hand. User-friendly features like rear power buttons and a front speaker enhance usability and sound quality.

DESIGN PROCESS
We explored three adjustable arm concepts: hinge-based joints, geometric locks, and a magnetic system. The magnetic solution was selected for its sleek, streamlined look and ease of use. The final design features complementary matte and polished finishes, includes ergonomic rounded edges, and a trapezoidal base for stability, all contributing to a simplified manufacturing process.

ENGINEERING
This unique product combines plastic and aluminum components and features a slightly trapezoidal shape for ergonomic slant adjustments and for optimum production prosses. The screwless, precision-molded assembly ensures durability and a streamlined construction process. It is designed to be compatible with various OrCam models, offering wide usability.
